Pain is a signal that something is wrong in your body and/or your mind.
Pain is interpreted when the nerves send signals through the nervous system, through the spinal cord to the brain. These signals pass through an area of the spinal cord called the "dorsal horn," which acts as gateway. Research has shown that psychological factors can contribute to the opening of that gateway more widely (more pain), or even the partial or total closing of the gateway (less/no pain). Stress, depression, and anxiety can make pain feel even worse, but a positive, calm, and focused attitude can assist in closing the pain gateway, alleviating the client of pain.
